Hiking San Felipe, Mexico

To get into the practice of hiking and being in the great outdoors, Joy signed up for a 27 km hike through the Valley of the Giants in San Felipe, Mexico. It was a one-day walk through the desert and along the beach on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja, and was timed with an almost full moon. Since it’s such a hot climate, the walk, or “caminata” in Spanish, started at 3:30 pm and ended after dark. There were more than 170 hikers and only about 30 percent finished, because it was so challenging.

Memories

A baby rattlesnake was hanging out right in the middle of the trail and everyone had to find a path around it.

Joy cheated! She walked six miles through the Valley and then caught a ride to the last rest stop, which was the beginning of 18 km stretch of sandy and rocky shoreline back to camp.

We saw three cars get stuck in the sand and water and only two got out that night. A Toyota truck was basically consumed by the Sea of Cortez until morning when the tide went down.

About 1.5 km before the finish line, we came across a glamping site that had a bar and small restaurant. We stopped for a drink and ended up staying for four hours, making friends
with the people who got their cars stuck in the sand.

Happening upon a National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) race on the way home and stopping to watch the off road cars zip by.
