Youâre not alone if youâve been tied up at work and have fallen out of your normal fitness routine in the last few months or years. Being a health-care professional while upholding your practice takes great time management skills and discipline, and itâs OK if youâve put some things on the back burner. However, youâve decided that itâs time to pick things up and start your workout journey again. Here are a few tips for getting back into a fitness routine to help you ease back in.
Start Slow
You wonât be able to pick up where you left off immediately, but you work toward it by easing into things. âSlow and steady wins the raceâ is true regarding getting back into a fitness routine. Donât try to make up for lost time by completing intense workouts. You should try starting with half the number of reps as before and stay consistent to help build your exercise level.
If you used to take daily runs, cut your run in half and start slow to help build your endurance and get your body used to running or walking long distances. If you havenât run in a while, remember proper running forms and practices to ensure you donât tire yourself out too quickly.
Create a Schedule
Youâre probably saying to yourself, âMy schedule is why I stopped my fitness routine,â but creating a fitness schedule will help you stay on track. Get your heart pumping on your less busy days, and use your busy ones as a rest day. On your workout days, take about 15 to 20 minutes to get your body in motion and build on that time as days pass.
Set Realistic Goals for Yourself
Itâs important that you set a goal that will take effort to accomplish, but consider setting a realistic goal with your time constraints and exercise level. Make sure that these goals are reasonable and obtainable without extreme changes or putting yourself in danger. As stated above, start slow. Start with easy goals and build yourself up to more difficult objectives.
Do Workouts You Enjoy
You should have fun while youâre tackling your new fitness journey. If you donât enjoy your old workout routine, switch to something you want! Youâre more likely to stay motivated and keep going when you have fun during your workouts. If youâre not a fan of cardio but need to get your heart pumping, try dancing instead!
Keep Yourself Accountable
You must keep yourself accountable whenever you get back into your fitness routine. Staying accountable will help keep you on track and less likely to fall off again. Find someone to help you stay on top of things, put your goals on your fridge, or create an alert that tells you to get up. It may take time to get back into the groove, but by holding yourself accountable, you will get back into the routine.
